Today’s recipe is one that I borrowed from one of my favorite books, Clara’s Kitchen: Wisdom, Memories and Recipes from the Great Depression. (affiliate link) Clara does a wonderful job of putting together frugal and tasty recipes in this book, and adds some cherished bits of wisdom for frugality and simple living as well. I’ve modified this recipe a bit from Clara’s original recipe.
Pasta with Broccoli
1 – 16oz box angel hair pasta $1.00
4 T real butter 31 cents
4 T parmesan cheese 44 cents
1 bag chopped broccoli florets $2..00
1 t. pepper 16 cents
Salt to taste
Grand total: $3.91
Cook pasta as directed. You can cook the broccoli right in with the pasta, or steam it separately to retain more nutritional value. Drain pasta and/or broccoli, and return pasta to pot, and add broccoli, butter, cheese, salt and pepper. That’s it, you’re ready to eat!
**Want to spice it up? Experiment with different varieties and amounts of cheese, or add some grilled chicken, red peppers, or onion.
