A friend of mine wrote a post today asking if the 9-to-5 job was dead. I’m not sure if the regular day-to-day working job is dead, but one thing is for sure – the work environment of today is changing.
Years ago we got wise to the concept of multiple streams of income. We spent some time thinking about how interesting it was and about how we like for our family to gain some other income sources one day. At the time, he had a job in the manufacturing industry and I was a full-time stay at home mom. We were blissfully floating along in our financial ignorance, trusting that employers had the same faithfulness to their employees as Rick had to his employer.

No, the 9 to 5 job is not dead, at least here in central Illinois, although it is more like 8 to 4:30. I think most employers here are realistically loyal to their employees. Some small business men I know try hard to keep their employees happy, to the extent of putting up with some employee shenanigans for longer than they probably should. However, the federal government has made it very difficult for the small business survive with Obamacare and some local trends toward higher minimum wages and as a result, the employer had found it necessary to either cut hours or lay off employees, simply to keep the business open. The government and unions seem to want all businesses to be shut down but if that happens, who pays the bills?
Awesome comment, Kathy, and I couldn’t agree more! Glad to hear that there are still loyal and dedicated small business owners out there. The American dream still has some life in it!
I am somehow satisfied with my 9 to 5 job. But, I wouldn’t settle with this as I want to earn more to save more money for travel and leisure activities and to boost my retirement savings. So, I have to get multiple streams of income from jobs such as photographer, tutor, and virtual assistant.
That’s a great thing, Jayson!! The 9-5 is great for those who love it, and they should take full advantage of the opportunities they have!
