We think it’s important for families to be as prepared as possible for any natural or other disasters that may come their way.

Stories from the Great Depression

Greetings, friends!  I’ll try not to make this into a rant :-), but with all of the modern technologies of today and media ads running amuck telling us we need this, that and the other thing, I think we often forget just how good we’ve got it.  So, in order to lovingly remind you (and myself) of all of our blessings, I thought I’d share some tidbits of stories from the Great Depression.  If you like these, you can find more at the Ohio Department of Aging Website. Three Exercises to Take Charge of Your Health and Your Wealth

3 Activities to Boost Your Health and Your Wealth
3 Activities to Boost Your Health and Your Wealth

Today’s post is a guest post from fellow blogger Joseph Chiweshe, a physician and blogger who shares about the connections between health and personal finance.

The connection of our health and finances is undeniable. They provide the basis for the freedom and ability to do the things we love in our day to day lives, and if either is out of balance it seems like that’s all your mind is preoccupied with.

There are three mindsets in which, if you are intentional in both your money and your health, will help assure that both your health and your money are running smoothly. Today I’ll talk about those three mindsets and how you can utilize them to be physically and financially fit. Read more

Prepping For Newbies: What You Should Focus On

If you’re just beginning to consider being more prepared, whether that be for economic crises, weather-related crises, terrorist attacks or some other chaotic event, it’s important to assess what you really need and want in a prepping plan and to put that down on paper. At that point, you can begin taking steps to be more prepared.

First Focus

I was delighted to hear from a highly-esteemed friend and big shot in the corporate world that both he and his buddies (who work in the security department at his major company and are former FBI agents) are just as concerned as I am about the thought of being prepared for disasters of any kind. Prepping isn’t just for the crazies, as I’ve said dozens of times on this blog. There are real and valid reasons why prepping is a wise choice in this day and age of increasing natural disasters, regularly-occuring terror attacks and financial uncertainty. Read more

Superbowl Ads: How 4.5 Million Dollars Could Change the World

superbowlI love watching the Superbowl. And I love that we live in a free market society. I think it’s amazing that nearly anyone who wants to start their own business here can do so, regardless of money or experience. When I started my freelance writing business, it cost me only Internet access to get it up and running – and that’s free at most local libraries. I say these things to preempt that this post is not meant to be a slam against the Superbowl, against advertising and media or against the free market system, which I thoroughly support.

However, every single year when we watch the big game, I can’t help but think about how much money is going out of corporate pockets, and how much bigger of an impact that money could have on the world than it does via a 30-second ad. In that vein, I thought I’d share what 4.5 million dollars (the cost of one 30-second Superbowl commercial) could do for those who are suffering in this world.

Who knows: maybe one day corporations will start matching the money spent on their Superbowl ads with an equal amount of money donated to a worthy cause.  Read more

Gardening for Self-Sufficiency – Our 2016 Plan

canning spaghetti 3Gardening for self-sufficiency is different than gardening for fun. When we lived back in the suburbs, we had a small 10×15 or so garden plot, and each year we’d sit down and talk about what “fun” types of things we’d attempt to grow for the year. Preservation had that same “fun” theme, as we’d can pickles for the purpose of always having one of our favorite foods around, and we tried freezing green beans simply because we wanted to learn the process.

However, one of our goals in ditching suburbia for the sake of country living was that we wanted to begin to really turn our garden into a serious source of food for our family of six. What started out as a fun hobby is slowly becoming a vital source of food for the entire year. As such, the gardening we do now is vastly different than the gardening we did back in the suburbs. Rational Prepping: Part 3: Chaos Survival

Prepping for chaotic events
Prepping for chaotic events

This is a subject I don’t really care to talk about but at the same time, I realize how necessary it is. For the 3rd part of our Rational Prepping series (see part 1 on Financial prepping here and part 2 on weather-related prepping here) we’re going to talk about how to be prepared for a chaos event such as a terrorist attack or looting and rioting in your city.

I realize it’s no fun to talk about events like this, but as we’ve seen in the last couple of years (Paris, San Bernadino, Ferguson Missouri riots and multiple other chaotic scenarios) chaos-related scenarios are becoming more and more common. And most of them happen with little-to-no warning. So without further ado, let’s talk about how we can rationally prepare for scenarios like this that may hit close to home.  Read more

Rational Prepping: Part 2 Weather-Related

Prepping for Weather-Related Emergencies
Prepping for Weather-Related Emergencies

If you’re joining us late, you might want to go back and read Rational Prepping Part 1: Financial before reading part two here. We’re talking in this series about the fallacy that prepping is only for the “crazies”. As my blogging pal Shannon, from Financially Blonde learned after going 10 days without electricity courtesy of Hurricane Sandy, prepping is for everyone.

In the first part of this three-post series, we talked about prepping for financial disasters. Today, we’ll talk about prepping for weather-related disasters. Weather-related disasters can come in all shapes, sizes and forms. Tornadoes, hurricanes, droughts, windstorms, severe thunderstorms, etc – the list goes on and on. It might surprise you to know that it doesn’t take much of a serious weather disaster to leave you in a situation where you need to have preparation techniques and supplies in place. Read more

Rational Prepping: Part 1, Financial

How to Prepare for Financial Disaster

I read an article this week about how preppers are “crazy”. The article’s point was that many people are going overboard, spending gazillions of dollars on prepping for Armageddon-type events and circumstances. I get the author’s point: there are indeed some preppers out there – probably more than we know – who aren’t “rational prepping” by any stretch of the imagination. The stories are available everywhere; stories of people who are so full of fear that they’re preparing in ways that are more about fear than about logic.

I read about one guy who’s storing up millions of dollars of nickels because he believes it’s a safe metal to invest in. And then there’s this story about the multi-million dollar underground condo bunkers, complete with a full gym and state of the art security team. With all of these stories floating around online, I can see how people would brush aside the prepping community as a bunch of nutcases. But not all preppers are wasting their entire life savings on precautionary measures for Armageddon-type events that may or may not come. Read more
